EXHAUST
SYSTEM COATINGS
Insulating
the exhaust system to retain heat is commonly overlooked by
most racers. After heat has performed its function in the
combustion chamber, it travels out the exhaust port to the
header or expansion chamber. If gases are allowed to cool
they loose mass which causes them to lose velocity which reduces
the scavenging effect. By insulating the exhaust pipe the
gases are kept at the highest possible temperature which improves
the scavenging effect and reduces underhood temperature.
Interior
coatings on exhaust systems are very important, they help
the exhaust gas retain its heat and it reduces part temperature,
oxidation and corrosion. Most companies use the same coating
on the inside that is used on the outside as this is more
economical for them, however, there are several problems when
doing this. The coating is very thickness sensitive and if
applied too thick it will crack and flake off. Also this coating
needs to be sealed to prevent corrosion and oxidation. Process
Coatings uses a completely different coating that is not thickness
sensitive, does not have to be sealed and will fill in voids
promoting flow. The coating will also withstand substantially
higher temperatures and contain the heat better. The downside
to using this technology is that it is more expensive but
by using this you have the highest quality coating available
to protect your parts.

Cermakrome is the most popular kind of coating on the market
today. This type of coating (metallic ceramic) is used by
coating companies and manufacturers than any other material.
Cermakrome is extremely popular on exhaust systems, where
the high luster finish provides a very attractive durable
surface. The high temperature characteristics of ceramics
have been combined with metallic frits to create a coating
that can withstand temperatures in excess of 1300 Fahrenheit
and provides 5000 hour salt spray protection (ASTMB 117).
Cermakrome polishes to a high luster, stainless/chrome appearance
that will not rust, especially effective as a hard protective
coating for aluminum parts. The coatings that we use are of
the highest quality costing up to three times as much as our
competitors use. We offer the Cermakrome finish in two versions-
Standard and Show quality. The Standard finish is comparable
in looks just like a chrome finish and the Show quality looks
just like a chrome finish and has an additional thermal barrier
applied to the inside.
2.
Colorguard is a combination of special high temperature pigments
that have been combined with the Black satin resin to provide
a color stable, thermal barrier for exhaust system components.
Available in aluminum, cast iron, gold, light blue/gray and
dark blue .
